Thursday’s Tasty Temptations

InMyWildestDreams_850

I’ve been a slacker keeping Thursday’s Tasty Temptations rolling along at a consistent pace. Now, I’m back again and as a reminder, or to introduce you to the idea of these posts, my daughter remarked after reading my books that they always made her hungry. A reference to the number of times food is mentioned which made me wonder just how many times my scenes centered around food and family conversation.

I decided to look at my first book, In My Wildest Dreams, and get a count of food references. My last post, a few months back, covered chapter fourteen. Here’s an excerpt from chapter fifteen:

“Good morning, you two,” Layne’s daddy said in a boisterous tone as we entered the kitchen. “Son, you’d better grab some plates before Woods here polishes off all the food.”

Unbelievable. Woods was better, much better than I remembered. No evidence of the near-death experience I witnessed last night remained. His only response to the comment was to help himself to another stack of Olive’s pancakes with a satisfied grin. He did stop eating long enough to stand and address me as I came into the room.

“Good morning, Ms. Lynzi. I want to thank you for all your help last night. Those two would as soon killed me as to look at me, I think, and they left me in no condition to transport out of there on my own. If you hadn’t been in the barn I-I don’t know what would have happened to me.”

“I’m just glad we got you out when we did, Woods,” I answered, amazed at the rapid recovery.

“We both are,” Layne added. “What can you tell us about why they chose last night to confront you?”

We took seats at the table and listened as Woods told his side of the story. “They’re unhappy I’ve not handed Ms. Lynzi over to them yet. They want to use her to bargain with you about ownership and control of the land.”

“It’ll be a cold day in hell before they get their hands on Lynzi again, and the land belongs to the folks here, not to any one man.” Layne leaned over and kissed the top of my head. “Lake, any word from the teams running down the latest leads this morning?”

“Yeah, they checked in, nothing new to report though I’m sorry to say.”

They consumed pancakes as fast as Olive could turn them out. It always astounded me how much these guys could eat at one sitting so it was no time at all before the table was clean.

“Olive, you’re spoiling me here. When I go home, I’m going to have to do all this myself again and I’m not going to remember how,” I said to her as she gathered the last of the plates from the table and scurried off to the kitchen with them.

“Now don’t you go thinking about going back so soon, sweetheart. We still have lots to do here.” Layne leaned in and nuzzled his face in that spot on my neck that sent me into melt down mode as his warm breath bathed my skin. His hands slipped around my waist.

“Mmm, Layne,” I breathed. My eyes closed and my head tilted, giving him full access to my neck. My hand snaked up around his neck and tugged him even closer.

“Oh, geez. Don’t you two have a room?” Lake snorted.

“Don’t you have work to do?” Layne addressed Lake with a none-too-pleased expression and a hint of irritation in his words.

“Of course I do. Let me get my instructions from my boss. Oh, wait, that would be you. Well, what do you say, boss?” Lake was begging for a brotherly tussle if you asked me.

After a long pause, Layne shook his head and continued. “Well, Lake, I need the training room set up for kickboxing and the range for cross bow,” Layne said as we finished our coffee. “Lynzi’s gonna start some light training today.”

More coffee. No surprise there! In addition, breakfast consisted of pancakes. Stacks and stacks of pancakes! How do you like yours?

Lovers: The Doctor & Rose

Rose: I — I love you.

The Doctor: Quite right too. And I suppose — if it’s my last chance to say it — Rose Tyler…

— Doctor Who: Doomsday

The long-running British science fiction television show Doctor Who features the title character, a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, who has many adventures in time and space. Although from the beginning, it’s clear that the Doctor has family, children, and grandchildren, on-screen, there were no romantic relationships involving the Doctor until the show went off the air in 1989.

In the 1996 TV movie, there was a hint at romance — including an infamous kiss — but it wasn’t until the show returned to the air in 2005, that romantic elements were prominent in the show. The relationship between the Doctor and Rose Tyler was one that many new fans of the show, as well as older fans, enjoyed. What did you think of the Doctor and Rose?

Lovers: Han Solo and Princess Leia

Princess Leia: I love you.

Han Solo: I know.

The Empire Strikes Back

George Lucas’ 1977 smash hit film Star Wars introduced a whole galaxy of characters to our lives. Two of the favorites, other than the robots, were the smuggler Han Solo and the princess Leia Organa of Alderaan. They fought the evil galactic empire and fell in love along the way.

Star Wars remains a favorite film of many, and the couple of Han Solo and Leia remain a favorite of fans of the series. What do you think?

Lovers: Jack and Rose

Jack: You must do me this honor. Promise me you’ll survive. That you won’t give up, no matter what happens, no matter how hopeless. Promise me now, Rose, and never let go of that promise.

Rose: I promise.

Jack: Never let go.

Rose: I’ll never let go, Jack. I’ll never let go.

One of the highest-grossing films of all time was James Cameron’s Titanic. More than just a story of the famous maritime disaster, it featured the love story between homeless third-class passenger Jack Dawson and first-class passenger Rose DeWitt Bukater. The film remains a favorite of many, because of the love story. What do you think?

Lovers: Sawyer & Juliet

In the TV series Lost, there were many jumps through time and many jumps through relationships. Despite being tossed about by time and by circumstances — and even death — the love of James Ford, who went by the name “Sawyer,” and Dr. Juliet Burke, was still there at the end, when they met for the first time, again.

Many fans of the show enjoyed the relationship of Sawyer and Juliet. What did you think?

Lovers: Forrest & Jenny

Forrest: Mama’s gonna worry about me.

Jenny: Just stay a little longer.

Forrest: Okay, Jenny. I’ll stay.

The 1994 film Forrest Gump tells of the life of a young man from Alabama who found himself in the midst of many of the major events of the 20th century. Based on Winston Groom’s 1986 book, most of the film is told in flashbacks while Forrest is waiting for the bus to take him to visit his life-long love, Jenny.

The story leading up to their tragic final meeting is a favorite story for many. What do you think about the love of Forrest and Jenny?

Lovers: Edward and Bella

“How many times had I stared at Edward and marveled over his beauty? How many hours — days, weeks, of my life had I spent dreaming about what I then deemed to be perfection? I thought I’d known his face better than my own. I’d thought this was the one sure physical thing in my whole world: the flawlessness of Edward’s face. I may as well have been blind. For the first time, with the dimming shadows and limiting weakness of humanity taken off my eyes, I saw his face. I gasped and then struggled to find the right words. I needed better words.”

— Bella, Breaking Dawn

One of the biggest selling book series, and highest-grossing film series, is the Twilight Series of Stephenie Meyer. I first came to the series when a friend recommended it. I seemed to never have the time to actually read it, until during a long weekend getaway, I had the time, and began reading. I bought all the books, and later, all the films.

The story of Edward Cullen and Bella Swan and their life — and afterlife — together, is a favorite of many. What do you think of their story?
